Community Quilt Blog

The Community Quilts Program has been running since early 2018 and so far, (Sept. 2023) we have donated approximately 250 quilts to the women’s refuge in Katoomba run by DV West.

Blue Mountains Quilters has a great relationship with the Manager and staff at the refuge and we are delighted to be able to continue to support their clients. Each woman and child who comes to the refuge is given a quilt, made with love and care, to take with them to begin their new lives when they leave.

We have been fortunate, over all these years, to have a regular supply of beautiful, donated fabric and a band of dedicated volunteers who organise, sort, cut, sew, quilt and bind it into beautiful quilts. We have also received finished quilt tops and completely finished quilts which has helped us immensely.

We continue to be supported by some very talented and generous professional machine quilters in our group who do beautiful work on the quilts that we make.

We meet once a month on the third Friday of the month except December, in the Lower Hall, Central Villages Anglican Church, Honour Avenue, Lawson, from 10am until 3pm and always enjoy socialising while sewing. Bronwyn English is the Co-ordinator and can be contacted on 0412412083 or at billabourie@gmail.com.

Our facilities are well suited to our needs providing plenty of room for storage as well as tables for cutting and sewing. We are always keen to welcome new members.

Some BMQ members like to assist Community Quilts working at home planning, cutting out, organising kits for sewing by others and assembling quilt tops. These contributions are very welcome and allow members to contribute in the way that suits them best.

BMQ is also most appreciative of monetary support received from Katoomba RSL  which covers the cost of hiring the hall for the Community Quilts group use. Please click on the links below to view our handiwork.
