About Us
Blue Mountains Quilters is a Quilt Guild, based in the Blue Mountains region, west of Sydney in NSW, Australia. Coming off the back of the Springwood Community Quilt Show in 2017 was the idea to create a guild that is for quilters in the Blue Mountains region. Many people had expressed an interest in wanting to get involved with quilting groups in the region and in October 2017 a group from theSpringwood Community Quilt Show Committee began the process of incorporating Blue Mountains Quilters.
Springwood Community Quilt Show would now come under the umbrella of the new guild and would continue to be the main fundraising event for the association.
We enjoy helping our community through fundraising and hosting our biennial Blue Mountains Quilt Show. This is a non-juried quilt show with a featured quilter, quality retail stalls and arenowned café. Due to the success of our quilt shows we are able to support the local women’srefuge in Katoomba with financial assistance through Domestic Violence West (BlueMountains).
Membership - BMQ has over 120 members with a wide range of talents, interests and skill levels, from beginner to professional, who come together from all over Sydney and the Blue Mountains to learn and be inspired by each other. Membership is $60 per annum payable in June and visitors are welcome for a small charge of $10 per meeting. We hope you enjoy your membership, finding inspiration in spending time with other like-minded people, and we encourage you to participate in the opportunities available to broaden your sewing skills and to meet new friends. All our activities are based at the Central Villages Anglican Church, 11 Honour Ave Lawson unless advised otherwise.
Our Stitchers Gatherings are held on the first Saturday of each month. Meetings commence at 10.00 am and wind up at 4.00 pm during summer (October – March) and 3.00 pm during winter (April – September). Each gathering features a pop-up shop for you to indulge in some retail therapy if you wish, and from time-to-time Trunk shows and presentations from visiting quilters. Coffee and tea, as well as a delicious array of morning tea treats are provided on a roster basis by members of the group. A lucky door prize is also drawn at each gathering, with tickets available for $1 each.
Our 'Show and Tell' session gives you an opportunity to show off your creations and admire those of others. In order to share the various duties involved in making our gatherings a success we encourage members to volunteer for the morning tea, welcome table and end of day cleaning rosters.
Workshops by well-known tutors in a range of techniques are held throughout the year with reduced prices for members. Previous tutors have included Wendy Williams, Chris Jurd, Ann Murray, Jess Whelahan, Kathy Doughty, Lisa Mattock and many others. Our Community Quilts group meets on the third Friday of each month, from 10am till 3pm, in the lower hall, to create quilts for donation to the DV West Blue Mountains women’s refuge in Katoomba. We welcome any skills you have to offer including cutting out, sewing together, designing and quilting. New members are always welcome. Tea and coffee are available, BYO lunch.
Scrap Happy Sewing day, for members only, is held on the second Tuesday of each month. Members are welcome to bring their projects, machines and ideas to enjoy a day of camaraderie and fun creating something from their never-ending supply of scraps. If you’re happy to just sit and sew, you’re also very welcome. Tea and coffee available, BYO lunch.
